Mamertime Prison

The Roman Catholic church claims to have so many Biblical artifacts and sacred places it will make your head swim. It's convenient that most of their claims seemed to have originated out of nowhere in the 5th or 6th centuries and cannot be traced before that.
Csilla and I may have actually stumbled upon some true Christian history here though. At the base of Capitoline Hill sits Mamertime Prison where the RC church claims Paul was detained before his execution (of course they also claim Peter was here too). Given the proximity of the prison to the Roman Forum and the rate that Paul was being thrown in jail, there's a good chance he was here at some point in his ministry.
Not exactly a cell at Limestone Correctional, eh?

And what would a place like this be without a shrine and aids to worship? Note the upside down cross to signify Peter.

A church was built above the prison in th 1500's
Ancient light fixture with flourescent bulbs! Too funny.
